Having launched in September 2012, Lychee Oriental on Mitchell Street did not take long to start picking up good reviews and great awards. It was named the Best Newcomer in the Glasgow Restaurant Awards 2012 and then Scotland’s Best Asian at the Scottish Entertainment Awards – good going in less than a year.
Lychee Oriental is a stylish, contemporary space. The wooden screens, chunky furniture and low lighting are all very cool and give Lychee Oriental a definite city centre ambience. The slick decor is matched with sleek, professional and welcoming service.
The food is Cantonese via Hong Kong with the occasional excursion to neighbouring cuisines – Singapore noodles, a Thai red curry and Japanese katsu curries are among the options. As well as good value early bird and lunch menus, Lychee Oriental offers an extensive a la carte menu.
Popular starters include salt and chilli wings, pork and prawn wontons; prawn-stuffed chillies in a black bean sauce and yuk sung – spicy minced pork and chicken for wrapping in lettuce leaves. If you can’t decide what to go for then the mixed platter covers a number of favourites. Alternatively, give the dim sum platter for two a whirl.
As well as traditional classics such as crispy lemon chicken and kung po prawns, the menu is divided into stir-fried sizzlers, noodle dishes and house specialities such as the roast duck with lychees and plum sauce.
The seafood selection is particularly appetising. The classic steamed sea bass with ginger and mushrooms is present and correct as are the tiger king prawns with ginger and garlic. Add in fresh scallops cooked with pepper and black beans and Lychee Oriental’s fish menu is quite a catch.
If you are looking for a stylish, modern Chinese in Glasgow city centre then Lychee Oriental is worth seeking out.
