Since 1988, the City Merchant has been building a great reputation for serving the finest Scottish seafood and top quality Scotch steak. Fitted with rustic wooden furnishings and a subtle Celtic motif, the restaurant is split between the ground floor, gallery area and VIP loft.
Located on Candleriggs, in the heart of the Merchant City area, the restaurant is as popular with business diners as it is with couples out for a romantic dinner. It is also handy for a pre-theatre dinner before shows at the Old Fruitmarket or the Tron. The restaurant opens at noon each day and serves through until 10.30pm (although it is closed on Sundays) – useful if you need to take lunch late or dinner early.
A member of the Scottish Beef Club, the City Merchant serves plenty of fillet steaks, sirloins and surf ‘n’ turf combos along with Highland venison and Scottish lamb. While meat-eaters have plenty to get their teeth into, Scottish shellfish and fish are arguably the main focus at the City Merchant.
The a la carte menu is a great showcase for Scottish seafood, with West Coast mussels, oysters, langoustines, scallops, lobster, salmon and cod all on offer. The daily seafood specials range from dishes such as seared fillet of bream with a red pepper crust to oysters served with Tabasco and a shot of Stolichnaya vodka. There is also the option of the Flavours of Scotland menu featuring Cullen skink, Shetland salmon, haggis and marmalade pudding with Glayva ice cream, it staunchly flies the flag for Caledonia’s culinary achievements.
As well as the main restaurant area, City Merchant also offers private dining options. The VIP loft area is ideal for small intimate gatherings or business meetings between 12-16 people. The Cellar Function Suite is available for up to 45 people, self contained with its own bar, the ideal rendezvous for informal gatherings.
