A popular stop for breakfast, lunch, dinner and all points in between, Browns has a plum position on George Square in Glasgow city centre. Housed in the old General Post Office building, Browns is part of a nationwide family of relaxed brasseries. The staff are smartly turned out in white shirts and, on a couple of evenings each week, a pianist tickles the ivories and adds to the elegant atmosphere.

Great coffee and feisty cocktails are a draw at Browns but the real star of the show is the modern British food. Browns brasserie has several menus and they are all extensive. Classic dishes, many of which would fall under the comfort food heading, are the name of the game. From steak pie to cod ‘n’ chips via calves liver and mash, Browns serves the sort of much loved dishes that people really want to eat.

As well as daily specials, each day of the week has its own plat du jour. For example, Thursdays are lobster night while Mondays see slow cooked ribs on the menu. The Browns house salad, the Caesar salad and the tuna Nicoise are all available for those in search of something less meaty.

At lunch, there are hot dogs, sandwiches and smaller portions of the menu’s main courses. Vegetarians have the choice of dishes such as the roasted goat’s cheese with a walnut crust, the ricotta, beetroot and truffle tortellini or the sweet, potato, squash and mushroom filo parcel.

On Sundays, the roasts come into play with the rib of beef tempting diners along with corn-fed chicken, sweet cured gammon and the shoulder of lamb. Afternoon tea, served from 2.30pm to 6pm, is also a popular choice, particularly with weary shoppers. As we mentioned, the cocktail list bears investigation especially the aftertails – a boozy alternative to a post-dinner coffee.
