Opened in early 2014, Alla Italia is on Pitt Street just around the corner from the King’s Theatre. With live music at weekends and a spirited atmosphere every night of the week, it is no wonder that the popular Italian bills itself as ‘The show before the show’. Naturally, Alla Italia’s pre-theatre menu is always popular but, with opening hours that run from midday to midnight, seven days a week, the cosy restaurant is also a hit with lunching office workers, shoppers, parties and couples dining by candlelight.
The chefs at Alla Italia take great pride in locally sourcing as many ingredients as possible. From the dishes on the set menus to the a la carte, everything is freshly prepared and cooked daily. All diners are given complimentary focaccia, olive oil and olives to nibble while selecting their meal.
Alla Italia has a wide selection of antipasti from arancini rice balls stuffed with wild mushrooms to the old school favourite of Parma ham with seasonal melon. The fritto misto, comprising prawns, calamari, scallops and vegetables in a light batter, are always a hit as are the bruschetta and focaccia topped with ingredients such as cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and basil.
As well as a good selection of classic Italian pasta, pizza and risotto, the menu includes dishes such as the scallops with lemon butter and the house signature dish – a 7 oz, Scottish fillet steak served with barbecued wild mushrooms and tomatoes.
Desserts such as the vanilla pannacotta with fresh Scottish berries show the marriage of Scots and Italian ingredients at their best. Alternatively guests can opt for the pure Italian flavours of desserts like the tiramisu or Italian ice cream.
The carefully chosen wine list ranges from Italian Pinot Grigio to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc while the selection of liqueur coffees includes the ever popular Italian coffee made with amaretto.
Alla Italia is situated on Pitt Street, a short distance from the O2 ABC and a minute’s walk from the King’s Theatre. Taxis to the Hydro and SECC will take five to ten minutes. Queen Street and Central railway stations are both within a fifteen minute walk.
